The winners of the Eurovision Song Contest 2021 were an Italian band.
Mneskin won the 65th Eurovision Song Contest 2021 on Saturday (22 May), making them household names.
Despite the jury’s disapproval, the audience was enthralled by their Zitti E Buoni performance and helped push it to the top of the table with 524 points.
The band is now well-known all over the world, but what exactly does Maneskin mean and where did they get their name? Keep reading and find out!
#1: They first met at school.
Victoria De Angelis (bass) and Thomas “Er Cobra” Raggi (guitar) met in middle school and have been friends ever since. Despite knowing each other’s love of music, they didn’t become close until August 2015, when they were both students at Rome’s J.F. Kennedy Scientific High School. They decided to form a band at that point. They were later joined by Damiano David, a singer, and Ethan Torchio, a drummer. A Facebook ad was used to recruit the latter.
#2: They are Italians with a Danish name.
The four members came up with the moniker Maneskin by accident. The band was looking for a name to enter a local music competition for emerging bands, as Victoria revealed. “However, we had no idea what to call ourselves.” Then there was the thought: because Victoria is half-Danish, the research would focus on a word from that language. Everyone fell in love with the sound and iconicity of “Maneskin” when the bassist said it. They were so enamored with the Nordic country that they decided to visit it a few months later. The word means moonlight in Danish. It was a lucky charm. The band went on to win the competition’s first prize. It was the start of a promising career.
#3: Their lead singer shares the same birthday as two rock legends.
Damiano David, Maneskin’s 22-year-old singer, was born on January 8, 1999. On January 8, 1935, one of the most important cultural icons of the twentieth century, Elvis Presley, the King of Rock and Roll, was born. A few years later, on January 8, 1947, The Thin White Duke David Bowie, another influential figure in the music industry and one of the greatest artists of all time, took the stage. Surprisingly, all three share the same birthday as another figure, Kim Jong-un, the leader of North Korea, who was born on January 8, 1984.
#4: They began their career as street performers in Rome.
Maneskin honed their skills in the heart of their birthplace, Rome. Live performances for passers-by were sandwiched between hours of rehearsals in the studio. They could be heard on the city’s historic streets, including the famous Via del Corso and the Colli Portuensi neighborhood.
#5: They rose to fame after appearing on X Factor Italia.
Maneskin was introduced to the general public during the eleventh season of X Factor Italia in 2017. Manuel Agnelli, the leader of the alternative rock band Afterhours, coached them on the talent show. From the first audition on, they were considered the favorites to win. They came in second place, behind pop tenor Lorenzo Licitra. However, some of their stage performances went viral, such as when they covered The Struts’ “Kiss This” while Damiano pole danced in stiletto-heeled boots.
#6: They share a manager with two former Eurovision contestants.
Maneskin are undeniably gifted individuals. Marta Donà, their manager, is responsible for a large part of their success. She is known for her professionalism and ability to establish credible careers for her artists, which the public and critics alike admire. Marta is the CEO of LaTarma Management, a female-led company that promotes and advises artists and personalities in the music and entertainment industries. She began her career in management, where she worked with Marco Mengoni, her flagship artist. She began collaborating with Francesca Michielin a few years later. She appears to have figured out the formula for success!
#7: Harry Styles has influenced them.
Maneskin was interviewed by online magazine The Upcoming during their London show on February 22, 2019, and revealed the artists who have influenced their style. The four musicians admitted to listening to a wide range of music, from Bruno Mars to the Red Hot Chili Peppers, via the Arctic Monkeys. But there is one name on which they all agree: Harry Styles, the former member of One Direction. Maneskin has covered two of the singer’s songs: “Kiwi” and “Carolina,” which is no coincidence.
#8: They went on a month-long tour of Europe.
Maneskin embarked on their first international tour in February 2019, with eleven dates across Europe. A half-hour documentary about the experience was released on the band’s YouTube channel. They can be seen working on a beat for a new song during a break between dates. “Come on Thom, you’re going to win Sanremo,” Damiano jokes with guitarist Thomas Raggi. They won the coveted Sanremese golden lion two years later.
